Recreation Integration Victoria

Recommended by 2 members

About: As a Leisure Assistant you help individuals with disabilities get involved with recreational activities in the community. You role is to provide support and encouragement while building a relationship. As an Inclusion Facilitator, you are a one-on-one aid for kids 6-18 yrs old with disabilities to help integrate them into summer camps.

Raters’ average experience: 8.5 / 10.0
Raters’ positions: Leisure assistant (volunteer) / Inclusion Facilitator (paid)

Raters’ comments:
“I enjoyed building a long term relationship with an individual from the community. I recommend it because it is flexible in that you schedule when you want to meet with your match, there are not strict days or times that you must volunteer.”

“The organization is really committed to improving quality of life for people with disabilities and they choose their staff based on shared values so you work with some really awesome people. Not to mention, as an Inclusion facilitator you get the excuse to attend summer camp and have tons of fun. In terms of pre-med, this work experience gives you a better understanding of what challenges people face with different disabilities, including stigma and stereotypes, and it gives you many opportunities to learn how to advocate for this population that may someday be your patients.”

Time Commitment: 1-4 hours/week, Inclusion Facilitator is full-time during summer
